Automatic vs Semi-Automatic Scooter — Which to Rent in Phu Quoc?

This is the first decision to make before you rent. The good news: none of our bikes have a hand clutch, so even the "semi-automatic" ones are far simpler than a real manual motorcycle. Here is exactly how they differ and which to choose.

The difference in one minute

Automatic (CVT): twist the throttle and go. No gears, no shifting, nothing to think about. Examples: Honda Vision, AirBlade, Lead, PCX, SH Mode.

Semi-automatic: you change gears with your left foot, but there is no hand clutch — the bike handles the clutch for you. A short learning curve. Examples: Honda Wave, Yamaha Nouvo.

Our verdict

If you are even slightly unsure, rent an automatic — almost every first-time tourist on Phu Quoc does, and the Honda Vision at $6/day is the perfect starter. Only pick a semi-automatic like the Honda Wave ($4/day) if you already know you enjoy shifting and want the lowest price. Not sure which model?
