How to Get Around Phu Quoc — A Complete Transport Guide

By Alex Nguyen · Updated May 2026 · 6 min read

Phu Quoc is Vietnam's largest island — about 50 km top to bottom — and its beaches, waterfalls and the cable car are spread far apart. How you get around makes a big difference to your budget and how much you actually see. Here is every option, with real costs.

1. Motorbike — best for most travellers

A rented scooter is the cheapest and most flexible way to explore. Rates start at $4/day and the roads are calm and well-paved compared with mainland Vietnam. You can reach hidden beaches and viewpoints that taxis skip, and stop whenever you like. Beginners do well here — see automatic vs semi-automatic and our fleet. We deliver free to your hotel or the airport.

2. Taxi & Grab

Metered taxis (Mai Linh, Sasco) and the Grab app both operate here. Grab is convenient around Duong Dong and Long Beach, but coverage thins out in the north and south, and wait times grow. A single airport-to-hotel taxi often costs more than a whole day's bike rental, so taxis make sense mainly for groups, late nights, or if you do not want to ride.

3. Car rental & private driver

Self-drive cars are uncommon and require a Vietnamese or converted licence; most visitors instead hire a car with a driver for a day (roughly $50-$80) — a good choice for families with small children, elderly travellers, or rainy days. It is comfortable but far less flexible than a bike for beach-hopping.

4. Airport transfers

Many hotels offer paid airport pickups. The cheapest and most independent option is to have a motorbike waiting at arrivals — we meet you at the terminal 24/7. Read our airport guide for a full breakdown.

5. Bicycle & walking

Some resorts lend bicycles, fine for a short beach ride but impractical for the island's distances and midday heat. Long Beach is walkable along its strip, but you will want wheels for everything beyond it.

The verdict

If you can ride, a motorbike wins on cost, freedom and coverage — it is how most visitors explore Phu Quoc. Mix in the occasional Grab or private car for rainy days or nights out. Ready to roll? Compare our most popular models, check prices, or plan your days with our 3-day Phu Quoc itinerary.
