Sao Beach Phu Quoc by Motorbike: Road, Sand & Sea
By Alex Nguyen · Updated June 2026 · 6 min read
Sao Beach is the postcard shot of Phu Quoc — powdery white sand, calm turquoise water, and almost no rocks. Reaching it on a rented motorbike from Duong Dong takes roughly 30–40 minutes and opens up a full southern loop combining the beach, An Thoi harbour, and the world's longest non-stop cable car at Hon Thom.
How to Reach Sao Beach from Duong Dong
From Duong Dong town centre, head south on National Highway 1 (Tran Hung Dao Street). This main road is wide, well-paved, and carries most of the island's traffic, so keep to the right lane and ride at a steady pace. After roughly 15 km you'll pass the An Thoi township — the island's southernmost port. From there, follow the signs east on Bai Sao Road for another 5 km. Total riding time is around 30–40 minutes in normal conditions.
If you are starting from An Thoi (e.g. after arriving by ferry from the mainland), the beach is only 5–7 minutes east of the harbour, making the route even simpler. The turn onto Bai Sao Road is clearly signposted, but our routes page has a downloadable map you can save offline before you set out.
Road Conditions and Riding Tips
The Tran Hung Dao highway south from Duong Dong is smooth asphalt and well-maintained — a comfortable ride for any automatic scooter. The final stretch on Bai Sao Road is narrower and winds through low jungle before opening onto the coast; reduce speed on the bends. Speed bumps appear near the beach car park, so watch for them.
During the dry season (November to April) the route is clear throughout. In the rainy season (May to October) brief afternoon downpours are common — start your ride before noon to be comfortably beachside before any showers arrive. Always wear a helmet; Vietnamese law requires it and GoBike includes one with every rental. For full riding advice, see our safety guide.
- Fuel up before you leave: — petrol stations thin out south of Duong Dong — fill the tank on Tran Hung Dao before turning off toward An Thoi.
- Carry water: — the road south is exposed with few stops; bring at least one litre per person.
- Parking: — a paid motorbike parking area sits just before the beach — secure and supervised; check the current fee on arrival.
Sao Beach: What to Expect on the Sand
Bai Sao stretches about 7 km along the south-east coast of Phu Quoc and is consistently ranked among Vietnam's finest beaches. The water here is naturally sheltered by the curve of the bay, making it safe for swimming even for children. The sand is fine and pale — almost white — with none of the volcanic grit found on some northern beaches.
Several beach clubs and casual warungs line the back of the beach. Most rent out sun-loungers and parasols (check current rates on arrival); some include a drink with the lounger fee. Fresh seafood — grilled squid, clams, and prawns — is available at the restaurants right on the sand. This is genuine local cuisine, not tourist-only pricing, because local Vietnamese families also flock here on weekends.
Best Time of Day to Visit
Early morning (before 9 am) gives you the beach almost to yourself — the light is soft, the sea is flat, and the sand has been raked clean overnight. Midday (11 am–2 pm) is the busiest period and the sun is strongest; if you plan a long stay, bring SPF 50 sun cream. Late afternoon light turns the water a deep jade colour and makes for excellent photography.
The overall best season is November through April, when skies are clear and the sea is at its calmest. The south-east tip of Phu Quoc faces slightly away from the prevailing monsoon swell, so Sao Beach stays swimmable longer into the wet season than beaches on the west coast. Always check local sea conditions on the day.
Combining Sao Beach with An Thoi Harbour and the Hon Thom Cable Car
An Thoi harbour, 5 km west of Sao Beach, is the jumping-off point for the Hon Thom cable car — a spectacular 7.9 km crossing to Hon Thom island that holds the Guinness World Record for the longest three-rope cable car over the sea. Combining a morning at Sao Beach with an afternoon cable-car crossing makes for an excellent full-day itinerary on two wheels.
Ride to An Thoi harbour after the beach, park your motorbike in the secure lot, and walk to the cable-car terminal. Check the current operating schedule and ticket prices locally on the day (we do not list third-party fares here as they change). The cable-car ride itself takes about 15 minutes each way and offers panoramic views of the An Thoi archipelago on clear days.
